WHAT IS THE WILL OF GOD FOR ME? As a human person, this question was the guiding principle for Jesus, the Son of God. He came, not to do his will, but the will of his Father. Mary, his mother, and his foster father, Joseph, were examples of those, who always listened to God and did his will. Mary, at the moment of Annunciation, knew that humanly, the ‘bizarre’ message of Angel Gabriel portended great danger for her life. Yet, she summoned the courage to reply: “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your will” (Luke 1:38). His foster father, who was betrothed to Mary, knew very well that traditionally, pregnancy outside wedlock was a taboo that was punished with death. But he listened to the will of God, who spoke to him through the angel, not to let any harm be done to Mary, but to take her as his wife. The will of God for us can sometimes look bizarre; but we have to develop the attitude of listening to God, who speaks to us in the depth of our being. Jesus says to us in the Gospel that his purpose of coming down from heaven is to do the will of his Father, who sent him. The will of the Father is that we may come to him through Jesus Christ, his Son. Therefore, believing in Jesus and acting accordingly means having eternal life. Let us open up ourselves and accept the teachings of Jesus, no matter how incredible they are. It is hard to accept Jesus as the bread of life, but that is the will of God for us.

PRAYER: Align our will to yours, O Lord, so that we may not seek to carry out our own plans but yours. May your will be done always. Amen.
