Fr. Michael Osatofoh Eninlejie, MSP - Homily for Monday Week 20 Ordinary time - August 17, 2020

MONDAY 20TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR II

Ezekiel 24:15-24, Matthew 19:16-22.

YOU MUST DO MORE THAN THE USUAL

Many of us Christians are very comfortable with doing the basis of the demands of our faith. We may think that we are righteous because we have not killed or have not stolen. We believe that once we keep the ten commandments, we will be saved. Life is more than the ten commandments. Many laws and requirements  for good Christian living are not written in the 10 commandments, thus we ignore them. Most times we concentrate more on what to avoid, without thinking of what we are to do. It is not enough to avoid evil, we must also do good. The man who approached Jesus this morning was content with the fact that he had not committed adultery, he had not stolen, he had not bore false witnesses and so on. Since the law does not compel him to give to the poor and needy around him, he did not think of doing so. Jesus makes us understand today that we must go beyond the normal, if we want to make heaven. God help us. Amen.
