Fr. Michael Osatofoh Eninlejie, MSP - Homily for Thursday Week 18 Ordinary time - August 6, 2020

THURSDAY 6TH AUGUST 2020
FESAT OF THE TRANSFIGURATION OF OUR LORD
Daniel 7:9-10,13-14, Psalm 96:1-2,5-6,9, 2 Peter 1:16-19, Matthew 17:1-9

THE LORD IS KING OF ALL THE EARTH

Today we celebrate the feast of the transfiguration of Jesus on Mount Tabor. It was an event Jesus made some of the Apostles to witness, so as to strengthen their faith in him. After two tears of his ministry with his Apostles, he took with him, Peter, James and John his closest Apostles to reveal to them a foretaste of the kingdom of God. The Apostles knew and believed that Jesus is the Son of God,  the experience of the transfiguration helped to strengthen their faith in Jesus.
When Jesus was on the mountain, the Apostles saw two people; Moses and Elijah appeared to discuss with Jesus. For the Jews, their greatest treasure is the law and all the prophets who accompanied them throughout history. Moses provided the Jews with the law, and Elijah is considered the greatest of all Israelite prophets. In the transfiguration experience the voice of the father was once again heard just like during the baptism of Jesus, to acknowledge that Jesus is the son of God. The presence of Moses and Elijah proves that Jesus is the fullness of all the laws and prophesies, he is the visible image of the invisible God.
In the second reading of today, we hear Peter recount his experience on the mountain during the transfiguration of Jesus. He wrote as a first hand witness and says that he did not invent or forge the stories he recounted.
Just as the prophet Daniel saw and wrote in the first reading of today, Jesus is the son of  God, he is the king of kings, he is above all the laws and prophets. He will sit on judgement throne on the last day, and every tribe, people and nations will come to him, and he will judge them. How are you preparing for that day? God help us. Amen.
