FRIDAY AFTER ASCENSION
Acts 18:9-18, John 16:20-23
Since the beginning of the
Covid-19 pandemic, many of us have been very sad and sorrowful, not just
because of the virus but also the resulting lockdown which has placed
everything on hold. Many people are lamenting because of their plans which have
been suspended. Businesses, schools, religion and other events have all been
put aside. Nevertheless, many of us are very hopeful, looking forward and
hoping for better days.
This is the concern of Jesus in
the gospel reading of today as his Apostles are sad that he is leaving them. It
is a virtue to trust and hope in the midst of suffering and distress. It is a
virtue to remember that there is always light at the end of the tunnel. Jesus
gave an example with a pregnant woman today. She funds life very difficult and
she is in pains during the period of pregnancy and especially at delivery. As
soon as she is delivered of her baby, the joy of the child makes her forget the
pains she had passed through. We may be experiencing our own period of grief,
but we should never forget that moments of consolation are also sure to come.
Jesus has ascended to his father
and the Apostles are sad, thinking that they will be doomed, but he has not
only promised us the Holy Spirit, but heaven as well. As we begin our novena to
the Holy Spirit today, let us look beyond our present situation and look up to
the future with hope and trust in Jesus. God help us. Amen.
