12th week in ordinary time
2 Kings 25:1-12, Matthew 8:1-4
When we are in desperate need of
something, we just want it at all means not minding how the situation is for
others. This is also how many of us approach God. When we need something from
God, we do not ask as if it is possible for us not to get it, but that we need
it. Some even pray in a manner that suggests that they are commanding God to
give it to them there and then.
In the gospel reading of
today, a leper teaches us the best way
to approach God in prayer. He is asking Jesus to cleanse him, only if he wants
to. He is not forceful about it. This is the mindset of someone who believes
that God knows what he needs and will always give to him even before he asks.
We can always approach Jesus in
prayer, but he will only answer us the way we want if it is also his will for
us. Let us therefore not be discouraged if our prayers sometimes seem
unanswered. God has a better plan for us. God help us. Amen.
