FRIDAY 5TH JUNE 2020
MEMORIAL OF ST. BONIFACE
2 Timothy 3:10-17, Mark 12:35-37
It is very important for parents
or elders who have had a lot of experiences in life to advice younger ones who
are just coming up. This will help them not only to face life with the right
mindset, but also for them not to repeat some of the mistakes they had made.
In the first reading of today, we
see how St Paul was advising Timothy a young man who had followed him and had
learnt from him for some time and had now become the bishop of Ephesus in the
early church. Paul had gone through various moments of pain and suffering in
the course of preaching the gospel, he was therefore also advising Timothy to
get ready for the same difficult life since he had decided to follow Jesus. No
true preacher of the gospel finds life easy, even among those he is called to
work.
This was also the case of St
Boniface who we celebrate today. He had joined the Benedictine Abbey in
Southampton England, and was later commissioned for mission in Germany by Pope
Gregory II since it was his desire to preach the gospel in a foreign land. Like
Timothy, he was also created a bishop in Mainz where he had evangelised. He worked
with king Pepin the short to reform the Frankish Church. As a man of over 70,
he continued to work to reform the Church in Holland, there he was murdered on
the 5th of June, 754.
As true Christians, we should
also be ready to give all of ourselves and what we have, even our lives to the
preaching of the gospel. God help us. Amen
