Fr. Michael Osatofoh Eninlejie, MSP - Homily for Monday Week 14 Ordinary time - July 6, 2020

MONDAY 14TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR II
Hosea 2:16,17-18,21-22, Matthew 9:18-26
The level of faith some Christians have is very amazing. There are some situations in life that some Christians find themselves that they do not bother to call on God again. They lose all hope and trust.
In the gospel reading of today, we see two people in seemingly hopeless situations. One is an official whose daughter had already died, and the other a woman who had suffered from a cancerous disease for over 12 years. These people had no reason to come to Jesus again because nothing can physically be done about the situation. We see it very clearly when the people in the official's house were laughing at Jesus when he came to raise the child from the dead. The sick woman also did not even have the courage to ask Jesus, but she knew that no situation is weird for Jesus; with him all things are possible.
This is the type of faith the gospel reading calls us to have today. We may be in a situation that seems unreasonable to call on God, we may think that God will not do anything about it anymore. With faith in God, things we can never imagine can happen. Jesus tells us in Matthew 17:20 that many of us are not able to achieve some things in life because we do not have faith. We easily give up on God and ourselves. If we truly have faith even as small as a mustard seed, we can command mountains to move and they will obey us. Many of us Christians may think that we have faith, it is only when we are faced with different situations in life that we will discover that our faith is very shallow. God help us and increase our faith to always trust him no matter the situation. Amen.
