Fr. Michael Osatofoh Eninlejie, MSP - Homily for Friday Week 16 Ordinary time - July 24, 2020

FRIDAY 16TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME
JEREMIAH 3:14-17, MATTHEW 13:18-23

THERE IS NO EXCUSE

Whenever we commit an offence or do what is not worthwhile, we can easily get out of it by saying I did not know. When the Israelites got to the promised land, the only  concept and visible presence of God they had was the ark of the covenant. They did whatever they liked, claiming not to know what to do. In the first reading of today, the prophet Jeremiah informed them that they will not have any excuse for behaving badly because they have the temple to worship God and God had sent them priests and prophets to guide them. Their problem was that they failed to listen to the word of God.
In the explanation of the parable of the sower in the gospel reading of today, Jesus, following the prophet Jeremiah tells us that the reason many of us do not bear fruits is because we do not take his word to heart. We cannot blame anybody on the last day, we cannot blame the fact that churches have been closed for some time and we could not hear the word of God. Jeremiah 31:33 tells us that God's words and laws are written in our hearts. Therefore, we are aware when we are not doing what is right. God help us. Amen.
