TUESDAY 17TH WEEK IN ORDINARY
TIME YEAR II
JEREMIAH 14:17-22, Matthew
13:36-43
NO MATTER HOW DARK, LIGHT WILL
SURELY COME IN THE MORNING
Going through the first reading
of today, the situation in our society especially a country like Nigeria easily
comes to mind. Listening to or reading the news every day, one just gets the
feeling that we can never get it right. Is it the way Covid-19 pandemic
situation in Nigeria is being handled that has made many people to start
doubting if the virus actually exists, or the corruption saga in the NNPC,
EFCC, NDDC and other agencies? A day without any discomforting news seems
abnormal in our society today. This has made many people to think that God has
abandoned his people.
This was also the hopeless
situation to prophet Jeremiah faced in the first reading of today. The people
of Israel were surprised that God seemed not to bother about what happened to them.
Many of them died out of hunger, some out of war, corruption, carelessness,
sickness and diseases. They were in constant fear of their neighbours because
there was no peace among them. It was as if they were already living in hell on
earth.
It is also time for us to look
back at how we have been faithful to the demands of our faith in God. Have we
abandoned his ways to do our own thing? God has power over everything, but
unless we repent from the evils we have caused ourselves and others, and resolve
to make amends, we may never truly see the light. For those who are suffering
the evils caused by others, let us take courage because there is light at the
end of the tunnel, just as light will come in the morning no matter how dark
the night is. May almighty God grant us
the grace to trust in him in the darkness so that we may rejoice in the light.
Amen. God help us.
