Fr. Michael Osatofoh Eninlejie, MSP - Homily for Friday Week 14 Ordinary time - July 10, 2020

FRIDAY 14TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR II
Hosea 14:2-10, Matthew 10:16-23
As Christians, many of us live a care free life, not because we do not care about the various dangers we are exposed to everyday, but because we have entrusted our lives to God. When we pray about what we want, we believe that God has answered us and the result will be made manifest at his own time. We do not panic when things seem not to go the way we think they should.
As we continue to reflect on the words of Jesus to his Apostles who he is sending out on his mission, we see a call to a total surrender of our wills and intellect to God.
Jesus tells his Apostles that they should not think that working in his vineyard and preaching the word of God is a very rosy endeavour. They are going to preach to people among whom are like wolves who will not listen to the word of God and would want to devour them. They are therefore called to be wise in dealing with the people because the devil can use some people to ensure their destruction. This is what we are all to hearken as Christians. Nevertheless, no matter how wise and careful we are, some things may still happen which we did not plan for. Jesus therefore assures his Apostles as he assures us today, that he will be there with us on our days of troubles which we encounter in our quest for his work. We should not bother what to say or do to defend ourselves, he himself will supply the words and defend us.
This is also the message of the prophet Hosea in the first reading of today. Sometimes we think that we have achieved something because we are very wise and careful. If only we know the unseen battles God fights for us. May God give us the grace to be conscious of his presence in our lives. Amen.
