Fr. Michael Osatofoh Eninlejie, MSP - Homily for Monday Week 17 Ordinary time - July 27, 2020

MONDAY 17TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR II
Jeremiah 13:1-11, Matthew 13:31-35

SMALL BEGINNINGS

Most times in life, many of us do not take what looks small and ordinary to be serious. The bigger a thing, the more likely it is to get attention. Many people have shared experiences of how what they have overlooked and thought will not survive, became a source of their survival. Jesus for example, was not taken serious as a child, many people looked at him as a small insignificant boy until he grew up and started his public ministry.
In the gospel reading of today, Jesus gives us parables to illustrate how what we need to make heaven look small and insignificant but no one can do without them. Those who know mustard seed can testify that it is the smallest of all seeds, but it's tree when it grows is a very big one that all the birds of the air find shelter. Those who bake will also understand that a flour looks so ordinary, but when it is leavened with yeast, it produces a big food.
This is also what the Christian faith is all about. Jesus and his Apostles started preaching about the kingdom of God as if it was a joke, but today, it is the greatest reality we face.
In the first reading of today, God illustrates through the prophet Jeremiah how those who do not take the word of God serious will get rotten and become good for nothing. Let us take the things around us serious, no matter how small, humble and insignificant they seem. We can never tell where our salvation will come from. God help us. Amen.
