THURSDAY THIRTEENTH WEEK IN
ORDINARY TIME YEAR II
Amos 7:10-17, MATTHEW 9:1-8
If you have not been hated before
for saying the truth, you may not understand what the prophet Amos is passing
through in the first reading of today. As a true Christian, there would be
moments in life when what people will say or do to you will not be your
concern. Your priority will only be the truth. This is also what priests of God
should also be ready to face. As a priest for example, it is expected that I
tell people the truth about their lives. Lying to people so that they will be
happy will be very disastrous at the long run.
In the first reading of today,
the prophet Amos told the king to repent, less the nation go into exile. Words
were sent to the king of Israel to banish Amos from the land. The response of
Amos is very captivating and it represents who a true priest and prophet of God
is. The priesthood is not a profession, but a vocation which only those called
by God can attain. Amos told Amaziah that he did not choose to be a prophet, he
was a shepherd when God called him. Instead of hunting those who tell us the
truth, let us look into our lives and repent. God help us. Amen
