Fr. Michael Osatofoh Eninlejie, MSP - Homily for Tuesday Week 16 Ordinary time - July 21, 2020

TUESDAY 16TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME
Micah 7:14-15,18-20, Matthew 12:46-50

GOD SHOWS NO FAVOURITISM

In our society today, people become successful not necessarily because of who they are, but what they have. Many people who may not even work as much as others get connected easily because of people they know. It has definitely become a case of who knows who.
Throughout social media in recent days, we see pictures of young people who just finished their NYSC service year, celebrating their successful completion of tertiary education and getting ready for work. Apart from the fact that getting work is very difficult in our society, it is also very disheartening to see that many uneducated people and those who were never serious in school get good paying jobs, while many intelligent ones are turned down. It is simply because those who get the jobs are those who are connected with people that matter in the society. It reminds me of how the best Jamb student some years ago was not offered admission because she did not bribe her way through, until some people intervened. It is the case in our society that if any of  your relative gets a government work, he/she diverts the money to the use of the family. This is indeed the type of society we find ourselves.
In the gospel reading of today, Jesus makes it very clear to those who were listening to him, that salvation is earned, not given for free. No one can influence God to get what he/she does not deserve. When he was told that his mother and brothers were looking for him, his message which literally  seems harsh, means that he is as close to anyone who does the will of God as he is to his biological family. This means that everyone is qualified  to be his brother and sister if we do the will of God. God shows no favouritism.
Let us know therefore that what we earn us the kingdom is the life we have lived; not because of our closeness to any human person, but to God. We pray that almighty God will grant us what is due to us. God help us. Amen
