Fr. Michael Osatofoh Eninlejie, MSP - Homily for Thursday Week 16 Ordinary time - July 23, 2020

THURSDAY 16TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR II
JEREMIAH 2:1-3,7-8,12-13, MATTHEW 13:10-17

REKINDLE YOUR INITIAL VIGOUR

As human beings, we make many good plans for our lives. We think of what we want to achieve and we work towards them. Many Christians pray to God and make promises that they fail to fulfill when their prayers are answered. When we get what we want, we forget that we are indebted to God.
In the first reading of today, we hear the prophet Jeremiah admonish the people of Israel, that they had forgotten all that God had done for them and have thrown away all the good plans they had, but have followed false gods. The Israelites had good plans for the promised land, but when they got there, they were overwhelmed with all that God had provided for them and got carried away by the things of the world. Many of us make good plans, but we turn to evil when we get what we want. You pray for your business to be successful,  to achieve a goal, to hold a certain Office and the likes. When the prayer is answered, you use the position and its benefits for evil. A politician said recently that it was not as if he did not have good plans before entering the office, he was only carried away by what he met in the Office. God is calling us to look back at how we started, and what we have achieved so that we will be motivated again to do good as we were before he answered our prayers. Many of us are seriously praying to God today, will you still remember God and stick with your good plans when he answers you? If he has answered and blessed you, are you still on the right track? God help us. Amen
